Gladstone eliminates Tri-County in 9-10 baseball tourney

GLADSTONE – Tri-County succumbed to a 15-hit barrage by Gladstone and fell 12-3 to be eliminated in the Little League baseball 9- and 10-year-old district tournament being held in Gladstone.

Tri-County, which includes some areas of Marquette and Alger counties, opened with three consecutive hits from Austin Bagwell, Paavo Mannisto and Michael Englund before taking a 2-0 lead on a two-run single laced by Hudsen Cady in the first inning.

But Gladstone starting pitcher Brennon Detiege was able to finish the inning with two strikeouts to end the rally.

Tri-County again loaded the bases on two walks and a single by Mannisto, but after Noah Peterson came on in relief for Detiege, he was able to prevent any runs from scoring.

“They just hit the ball where we weren’t, and we hit it right at them,” Tri-County manager Greg Mannisto said. “Gladstone made excellent defensive plays and there’s not much we can do about that.”

Gladstone then strung together five straight hits in a three-run rally in the bottom of the second, adding two in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and four in the sixth.

Logan Silta took the loss for Tri-County as he pitched four innings before being relieved by Bagwell.

Gladstone’s Brant Sanderson came on to pitch in the third and allowed just one more run aided by good defense, specifically in the outfield. He was also 3 for 3 at the plate with two RBIs.

Nevertheless, Coach Mannisto was pleased with his players’ tenacity.

“They had a long road ahead of them, that’s for sure,” he said. “They played really well and came a long way. A lot of positive things came out of this tournament from where we started.”
