1970s-era alumni win in Westwood tourney

ISHPEMING – Friday was the third day of the four-day Westwood Alumni Softball Tournament with winning teams getting close to their championship games.

In games at Sunnyside Field in Ishpeming Township, the combined classes of 1975-76-77 upended 1988, 14-5. Brian Maki and Kim Joki both went 4 for 4 for the winners, while ’88’s Jeff Wood hit a homer.

Also at Sunnyside, 1981-82-83 held off 1985, 11-8, as Ray Carlson tripled for ’85.

The Class of 2008 dumped 2013, 18-2, as Jake Greer cracked two over-the-fence homers and Dan Nelson had two inside the park for the victors.

The veterans of 1993 outscored 1996, 30-9, as the winners’ Shay Korpi and Shawn Helsten were each 6 for 6, Korpi belting a half-dozen doubles, while Joel Vickstrom was 3 for 3 for ’96.

And 2001 doubled up 1994, 16-8, with Erick Roberts going 4 for 5 with two homers and Ryan Healey making two diving plays at third base for the ’01 while Scott Syrjala and Jason LeClair were each 3 for 3 for ’94.

At Clarksburg, 2009 nipped 2012, 8-7, as Jake Forchini was 2 for 4 to help winning pitcher Toni Enrietti.

Kirk Hooper was 2 for 4 to help his pitching cause as 2007 edged 2015, 6-5. Christine Larson pitched for ’15.

The classes of 1978-79-80 held off 1984, 20-9, as Ron Coron was 4 for 4 and Dan Chapman 3 for 4 to back up winning hurler John LaFountain.

Chris Perry and Rhett Coombs each went 2 for 3 to help 1992 down 1991, 19-7, while Paul Honkala went 4 for 4 to lead 2002 past 2003, 17-2.
