Sands hosts 1st King of the Hill

SANDS – Sands Speedway will hold the first of four King of the Hill races this season during intermission of its regular racing schedule today.

The King of the Hill Spectator Drag, sponsored by Bartanen’s Auto Body of Ishpeming, is a one-lap race on the quarter-mile asphalt track starting from a dead stop for spectators using street-legal cars.

Open to all who have a valid driver’s license, entrants provide their own cars, sign a release and bring or borrow a helmet to wear.

Registration opens at 5:30 p.m. race day at the grandstand ticket office. Space is limited.

Registration is also available at the track’s website, www.sandsspeedway.com, under “King of the Hill registration” at the very top of the screen.

Other King of the Hill races will be held on June 27, July 25 and Aug. 29, all during the track’s regular Saturday schedule that runs most weekends through August.

This will be the second week of the season at the track, located off M-553 in Sands Township, with racing set in four classes from 5 to 8 p.m.

General admission is $10, with discounted rates of $7 for seniors and $5 for teens.

In addition, admission to the pit area is $20 for nonmembers and $15 for members.
