Prep girls tennis: Negaunee, Westwood take second in Kingsford

KINGSFORD – The Negaunee and Westwood high school girls tennis teams tied for second with 15 points while the host Flivvers captured the Kingsford Invitational with 18 points on Saturday.

Kingsford, Negaunee, Westwood and Iron Mountain each won two flights as the Mountaineers finished fourth with 11 points.

For Negaunee, Allyson Carlson defeated Iron Mountain’s Katie Bule, 4-6, 7-5, 10-5 for the No. 1 singles title. The Miners’ Dana DeBretto won the No. 4 singles bracket via a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Escanaba’s Emily LaFave.

Both Westwood victories came in doubles, with Lacey Pietro and Olivia DeRocha winning No. 3 and the duo of Emily Carlson and Jamie Ferris taking No. 4. Both wins came against Flivvers in straight sets.

The Miners also picked up a second-place from Abbi Kill at No. 2 singles after she fell in the finals to Iron Mountain’s Olivia Truscott, 5-7, 7-5, 11-9.

The Patriots’ Courtney Beauchamp finished second at No. 3 singles following a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Kingsford’s Santina Bianco.
