DETROIT — All-state status in high school boys basketball in MHSAA Division 2 was reserved for Lower Peninsula players this year.
In fact, just about all of those honored come from the southern half — or maybe more generously, the southern two-thirds — of the peninsula.
State champion Freeland swept the top two awards — the Falcons’ Wilson Huckeby was named Player of the Year and John Fattal the Coach of the Year.
Freeland, located between Saginaw and Midland, defeated Hudsonville Unity Christian 42-32 in the state championship game held March 14 at Michigan State University in East Lansing.
The furthest any Upper Peninsula team reached in the D-2 tournament was Kingsford, making it to the regional championship game in Gaylord before Ludington scored a 50-42 victory to end the Flivvers’ season.
Joining Huckeby and teammate Tristan Comer on the Division 2 First Team are Jackson Kohler of Yale, Eden Vinyard of Ferndale, Titus Spencer of Holland Christian, Maurice Jackson of Detroit University Prep, Carl Thompson of Grand Rapids Christian, Keyshawn Summerville of Lansing Sexton, Christian Cast of Detroit Country Day, Jaxon Francis of Adrian, Taj Williams of Ludington and Jordan Fuller of Romulus Summit Academy North.
The Second Team includes two players from runner-up Hudsonville Unity Christian, Owen VanderWaal and Scott Soodsman.
There’s also Drew Cabana of Chelsea, Donjae Gilmore-Slater of Parchment, Cam Gunsell of Ludington, Dexter Lillmars of Fruitport, Jordan McCoy of Grand Rapids Catholic Central, Jack Robinson of Madison Heights Lamphere, Connor McGarry of Caro, Johnathan Lake of Battle Creek Pennfield, Truman Brennan of Paw Paw, Zaiden Phillips of Grant, Ignire Muhammed of Warren Lincoln and Andrew Caldwell of Flint Powers Catholic.
On the Honorable Mention list are Max Noll of Croswell-Lexington, Justin Lange of Chesaning, Trey Oldenburg of Newport-Monroe Jefferson, Braylon Frantz of St. Clair and Kameren Higginbotham of Center Line.
