MARQUETTE — Josie Lakosky of the Northern Michigan University lacrosse team isn’t just good, she’s good quite often.

The junior attacker earned her second Attacker of the Week award this season on Monday from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Lakosky, a native of Victoria, Minnesota, not only is at or near the top of several NMU season records for offense, but already ranks in the top five in career totals at Northern despite being less than halfway through her third season.

Last week, Lakosky rolled up big numbers in the Wildcats’ only match, a 23-1 blowout of Saginaw Valley State in NMU’s conference opener on Friday afternoon in the Superior Dome.

She scored eight goals while assisting on three others for 11 points, and she did it in just nine attempted shots, not only every one of them being on goal, but eight of the nine going in the net.

After that performance, she ranks No. 1 in NCAA Division II with 5.22 goals per game, 65 total points and 7.22 points per game. Her 47 goals are No. 2 to the 48 posted by Madison Primeau of Lees-McRae.

And Lakosky’s 10.33 shots per game are No. 2 and 9.11 shots on goal per game are No. 1 nationally.

Then on defense, Lakosky recorded five ground balls vs. SVSU, adding five caused turnovers and five draw controls. The Wildcats dominated as a team in all those stats, too — 26-9 edge in ground balls, 17-5 in caused turnovers and 23-3 in draw controls.

Lakosky’s other GLIAC Attacker of the Week award came in the first week of the season.

This week, NMU has an interesting challenge, traveling to Allendale to take on Grand Valley State, which has won or shared the conference regular season title in all 12 years the sport has been offered by the GLIAC, while also winning nine conference tournaments, too.

But the Lakers are an uncharacteristic 1-7 this season, though their first five matches were against nationally ranked Slippery Rock, Indianapolis, Maryville, Florida Tech and Rollins. They most recently defeated Missouri Western State 9-6 on Sunday in St. Joseph, Missouri.

That match is at 5 p.m. Friday, to be followed by a 1 p.m. Sunday matchup vs. Davenport (5-3) in Grand Rapids.
