Wildcats fall in final regular-season wrestling dual

STEVENS POINT, Wis. — The women’s wrestling team at Northern Michigan University lost its final dual meet of the season on Friday night but still finished 10-4 in those kind of meets over the course of the regular season.

The Wildcats fell to Wisconsin-Stevens Point 32-14, giving up forfeits in three weight divisions.

After taking a 10-0 lead on NMU forfeits at 103 and 110 pounds, the Pointers won the first contested match at 117 to go up 14-0.

Then Northern answered with a victory by Jamie Cook at 124 pounds as she recorded a pin at 1 minute, 54 seconds.

UWSP picked up back-to-back wins at 131 and 138, then a forfeit victory at 145 to assume a 27-6 lead.

That’s when the Wildcats picked up a pair of technical fall triumphs to narrow the margin to 27-14. Sophia Bassino won at 160 with a 12-1 victory at 3:30, then Abbie Miles got her tech fall 10-0 at 2:59.

The Pointers got one final win at 207 for the final score.

In several exhibition bouts that were held, Northern’s Ruby Joseph, Abigale Swanson and Clarissa Wangen each earned a victory at 180 pounds.

The Wildcats now advance to an NCAA regional qualifier at a site and time to be announced on Saturday, Feb. 21. The NCAA Championships then come two weeks later on Friday and Saturday, March 6-7, in Coralville, Iowa.
