NMU wrestlers split at final conference duals

ALLENDALE — The women’s wrestling team at Northern Michigan University split a pair of decisions at the final Great Lakes Valley Conference duals meet of the season held Saturday at Grand Valley State University.

The national No. 18 Wildcats defeated Quincy 26-21 before falling to the host Lakers 35-11.

NMU finished the conference season with a 3-2 record for a third-place finish, trailing only McKendree at 5-0 and GVSU at 5-1.

In contested matches, Northern had a 9-4 record with sophomores Sophia Bassino and Abbie Miles and junior Alissa Caltagirone each going 2-0.

The Wildcats have one final regular-season meet left — at Wisconsin-Stevens Point at 7 p.m. EST Friday — before the NCAA regional qualifier scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 21, at a site to be determined.

Here are details from the GLVC duals:

NMU 26, Quincy 21

Northern won six of seven contested matches, having to forfeit at 103-, 110- and 131-pound classes while getting a win from Quincy that way at 124.

Zhivanna Magdaleno recorded five points for NMU with a pin at 2:32 of her match at 117 pounds, while Caltagirone did the same at 145 pounds in 2:13.

Bassino won by fall at 2:15 in the 160 class, as did Miles in 1:55 at 180.

Alyssa Keane won by a 12-5 decision at 138, while sister Mickaela Keane won 5-0 at 207.

Despite a somewhat lopsided score, the Wildcats actually went 3-3 in contested matches against the No. 4 team in the nation.

Caltagirone again won at 145 with a technical fall score of 11-0 at 4:17, while Bassino added another 160 win with a 10-4 decision.

Miles picked up her second win at 180 in a 10-0 tech fall at 2:30, too.
