MARQUETTE — Postseason awards for the men’s soccer team at Northern Michigan University have had a bit of an international flair as a pair of European natives earned All-Midwest Region Second Team honors from the Division II Conference Commissioners Association recently.

Luca Rosen of London and Alessandro Scialanga of Sutri, Italy, earned this latest honor after each was named to the All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference First Team about three weeks ago, Rosen as an at-large choice and Scialanga as a defender.

This was Scialanga’s second straight year earning this same D2CCA Second Team honor.

The NMU pair were among eight chosen from the GLIAC and 27 from around the Midwest Region. And Northern was just one of eight schools to have more than one player represented on the D2CCA Midwest honor squads.

Rosen, a junior, was No. 1 in the conference in almost every statistical category. In conference games, he led the way with his nine goals, four game-winning goals, 19 points, 68 total shots and 27 shots on goal. He was almost 30 total shots ahead of every other GLIAC player in that department.

Rosen was named GLIAC Forward of the Week twice, the only forward to earn the honor multiple times this season, and he earned assists in the league tournament semifinal and final games as the Wildcats won their first GLIAC Tournament championship and made their inaugural NCAA Tournament appearance.

Scialanga, a senior, played a full 90 minutes in every match until an injury sidetracked him in late September. Making what the coaching staff termed a miraculous recovery, he came back after three games out, and after a test reappearance with limited minutes, he played at least 84 minutes in every game the rest of the way.

He was counted on not only for his defense, but being the main player on set pieces as he finished with a goal and three assists, including two assists in the GLIAC quarterfinals that went to two overtimes and eight rounds of a shootout.

Sports information directors from NCAA Division II schools and conferences within the Midwest Region selected the all-region teams. Those selected to the First Team move onto consideration for All-America voting.

This was the first time NMU has had multiple players named D2CCA Midwest All-Region and just the third year they’ve won any of these awards.

Previously Sam Popp was named Second Team in 2018, while Scialanga got on the Second Team in 2024.

All-Academic

On the same day last week, a different organization, the similar-sounding College Sports Communicators, named its Academic All-District award recipients.

Six from NMU made the list, with a pair of them also advancing to the CSC Academic All-America ballot to be announced in about two weeks.

Those two are Scialanga and Rosen, with Northern’s other four All-District honorees being junior James Carr, senior Jan Hoffmann, junior Asaf Kristal and sophomore Teun van Gansewinkel.

With this award recognizing both performances on the field and in the classroom, a student-athlete must have a cumulative 3.50 grade-point average to be eligible.

This is the third year NMU men’s soccer has had CSC Academic All-District selections, but this year is the most players the Wildcats have had honored.

In 2023, Hoffmann, Cian Tunney and Kalvin Glodz earned this honor, while in 2024, Hoffmann, Scialanga, Carr, Tommaso Lami and Finn van den Berg won this distinction.
