MARQUETTE — Negaunee has made itself known as one of the top five volleyball-playing schools in the Upper Peninsula.
The Miners slipped into the No. 5 position among schools in Divisions 1-3 in this week’s poll voted upon by select members of the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.
Negaunee (11-4-1) defeated Gwinn in three sets last week, having gone 8-1-1 in its last 10 matches.
Marquette (5-7) is just above the Miners in fourth, having slipped a half spot from a tie for third last week. The Sentinels defeated Houghton and lost to Escanaba last week, then lost in a two-set “mini” meet vs. Kingsford at its own Sentinel Invitational last weekend.
The D 1-3 poll continues to be led by unanimous No. 1 Calumet (15-3-2), with Kingsford (19-3) a consensus No. 2 and Escanaba (10-5) a consensus No. 3.
Forest Park (15-1) is also a unanimous No. 1 in Division 4, with Hancock (13-5-2) second, St. Ignace (14-3-3) third, Ewen-Trout Creek (11-4) fourth and Lake Linden-Hubbell (16-8) fifth.
While no other schools received votes in the Divisions 1-3 rankings, Newberry (13-4) was among three schools in the “others receiving votes” category in Division 4.
