MARQUETTE — The Marquette Senior High School volleyball team rolled to a relatively easy three-set victory over visiting Gladstone at the Barb Crill Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.

The Sentinels won this Great Northern Conference match 25-11, 25-10, 25-19.

“We had a great win,” MSHS head coach Melissa Butler said in an email. “I’m pleased with how we played as a team, earning every point and not letting up. Our serving, blocking and hitting were strong.

“Some key players who stood out tonight were libero Jaylee Dellies, middle Bre Anderson, outside hitter Ava Maki (and) right side hitters Jocelyn Meed and Bo Richardson.”

The Sentinels improved to 11-8 and remain the No. 4 team in this week’s Upper Peninsula high school poll for teams in Divisions 1-3.

The poll is conducted weekly for much of the regular season by the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association and is voted upon by select members of that group.

Marquette is one spot ahead of a triumvirate at No. 5 — Negaunee (13-7-1), which owned that spot all by itself last week, West Iron County (8-6-2) and Jeffers (13-6-1).

Calumet (17-3-2) remains a unanimous No. 1, receiving all five first-place votes, with Kingsford (20-4) still the consensus No. 2. Escanaba (13-7-2) came in third.

In Division 4, Forest Park (25-2-1) continues atop those rankings also unanimously, followed by Hancock (15-5-2), St. Ignace (15-3-3), Ewen-Trout Creek (13-4) and Lake Linden-Hubbell (16-8).

With the exception of WIC and Jeffers tying for fifth in D 1-3, all the spots went unchanged from the previous week.

Also getting votes in Division 4 are Newberry (14-5), which missed the top five by a single vote, and Wakefield-Marenisco (15-5-1).
