MARQUETTE — The Marquette Senior High School boys soccer team passed its first test in the Michigan High School Athletic Association tournament on Wednesday, defeating Gaylord 5-0.

Playing at the Kaufman Sports Complex in Marquette, the Sentinels advanced to their Division 2 district championship game to also be played at home at 1 p.m. Saturday against Petoskey.

A win in that game would propel MSHS to a Division 2 regional tournament semifinal to be played at downstate Cedar Springs at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Fruitport or Muskegon Reeths-Puffer.

On Wednesday, Kaleb Chipelewski scored his team’s first and last goals as Marquette improved to 16-3-2, while Charlie Hrodey had a goal and two assists.

Chipelewski opened the scoring in the first half, getting an assist from Hrodey, then Hrodey pumped one in as Finn Stiles got his first of two assists.

The last goal before intermission came from Lucas Belkowski as he was assisted by Dylan Deneau and the Sentinels had a 3-0 halftime advantage.

Seth Sandstrom opened Marquette’s second-half scoring on a goal assisted by Hrodey, while Chipelewski rounded out the scoring with a goal assisted by Stiles.

MSHS goalkeeper Edan Hautamaki faced three shots in posting the shutout.
