Negaunee Miners pull off 8-0 girls tennis sweep of Iron Mountain
NEGAUNEE — He’s probably a hard man to please with all the success that Negaunee High School boys and girls high school tennis teams have shown for more than a decade, but head coach Kyle Saari seemed pretty satisfied with an 8-0 girls victory against visiting Iron Mountain on Thursday.
“This is the best we hit the ball this week,” Saari said in an email detailing the result. “Singles players drove many deep in the court, while our doubles teams all finished at the net.
“That’s always important this time of the year.”
The Miners improved to 8-0 in dual meets by winning all six contested matches in straight sets, dropping a total of just seven games in them. IM fielded teams at just two doubles flights at the meet.
Saari talked specifically about his top two doubles teams. No. 1 Alyssa Borlace and Autumn Ring pulled off a 6-0, 6-1 victory over IM’s Veronica Stanchina and Betsy Vanegas, while No. 2 Ella Standerford and Maija Rourke won by an almost identical 6-1, 6-0 verdict past the Mountaineers’ Lindsey Lewandowski and Emelia Miles.
“We’ve had several doubles flights step up and play a variety of spots this year,” the veteran Negaunee coach said. “Alyssa and Autumn did a great job in the top spot … and Ella and Maija give us consistent tennis every time out.”
The Miners get right back on the courts at 4 p.m. today with a home meet against Marquette, then are scheduled to host both Muinsing and Norway at 4 p.m. Thursday.
