Westwood boys tennis team dominates singles to down Ishpeming, 6-2
ISHPEMING — Westwood had little pushback in singles as it dominated a high school boys tennis meet against Ishpeming on Wednesday, winning 6-2.
The Patriots swept the four singles flights, losing just two games in the eight sets played.
Doubles was a different matter as the teams split those four matches, two of them extended to three sets.
In singles, Westwood No. 1 Andrew Niemi, No. 2 Patrick Klumpp and No. 4 Jaxson Alderton each won with 6-0, 6-0 whitewashes, while No. 3 Mason Hietikko was close to that, winning 6-1, 6-1 over Ishpeming’s Levi Nicholls.
Ishpeming carted off victories in the top two doubles flights, however, with No. 1 Hunter Smith and Caden Luoma getting extended in a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory over WHS’ Cameron Mahaffey and Reid Frustaglio.
The Hematites also won at No. 2 doubles when Hayden Hares and Tramon Gauthier won 6-0, 6-3 over the Pats’ Jayce Patron and Mitchell Ford.
The Nos. 3 and 4 doubles flights were almost mirror images in Westwood’s favor.
At No. 4, the Patriots’ Caden Balzarini and Daevon Timmons came back for a 3-6, 7-6, 6-3 win over Ishpeming’s Adam Maki and Ethan Corp.
Then at No. 3, WHS’ Xavier Grondz and Damian Grondz took out the Hematites’ Ben Rubick and Luke Laitinen 6-2, 6-1.
