LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Oakland Athletics, who are planning to move to Las Vegas in 2028, finished a two-game exhibition series against Milwaukee in Sin City with a 4-2 victory. The Brewers won 5-4 on Friday night.

The games were played at Las Vegas Ballpark, the home of Oakland’s Triple-A affiliate. The A’s just released renderings of the $1.5 billion domed stadium planned for the Las Vegas Strip.

The lease in Oakland ends after this season, so the A’s are trying to figure out a home from 2025-27. An extension in Oakland is possible, as are the Triple-A ballparks in Salt Lake City and Sacramento, California.

Nancy Spinelli retired to nearby Pahrump about six years ago after spending her entire life in Oakland. She wore an Athletics shirt to support her favorite team at Friday night’s game.

“I think it’s fantastic because it’s obvious Oakland hasn’t done anything to keep them there,” Spinelli said. “If anything, they’ve made it more difficult.”

Burnes to open in Baltimore

Corbin Burnes will be the opening day starter for the Baltimore Orioles, as expected, after the All-Star right-hander was acquired from Milwaukee in a trade last month.

Manager Brandon Hyde made the obvious official with the announcement Sunday.

“A real honor for me to let him know,” Hyde told reporters in Florida. “We’ve been talking about it for a while, and we’re real excited to watch him pitch on opening day.”

The Orioles made the move for an ace coming off an American League-best 101 wins last season before they were swept by the eventual World Series champion Texas Rangers in the AL Division Series.

It’s the third consecutive opening day start for the 29-year-old Burnes, who got the nod the past two seasons with the Brewers.

Williams suffers from sore back

Pitcher Devin Williams of Milwaukee is dealing with back stiffness that is clouding his availability for opening day.

He last appeared in a game last Tuesday, and Brewers manager Pat Murphy told reporters the 29-year-old reliever had an MRI in Arizona and was headed to California for further evaluation.

The All-Star right-hander is coming off a career-high 36 saves. Williams has had an ERA under 2.00 each of the past two seasons.

“Felt like he could move forward with it and just treat it,” Murphy said when asked about the diagnosis, declining to offer a time frame. “Give him some time off.”

Starting at $3.23/week.
