Westwood wins, Marquette loses
MARQUETTE — Westwood girls tennis defeated Kingsford 7-1 Tuesday.
WHS Coach Sarah Massie said via email: “Even though we didn’t have ‘ideal’ conditions for tennis today, we were just happy to get to play. We’ve had four meets and a few practices rained out since Labor Day.
“I was happy with how we played today, even having to battle through some 3-set matches, especially given those circumstances.”
She added: “Izzie (Marta) and Alyssa (Couveau) played well today against a solid #1 doubles team. They’ve been working on playing more offensively, especially from the net. As they put together all of their ‘tools’ into a match, they continue to get better. There are a lot of strong #1 doubles flights across the U.P. right now, so they know they have to show up every meet ready to go.”
Escanaba 6, Marquette 2
Host Marquette fell to Escanaba but MSHS Coach Karl Thomsen was grateful to be able to play at all.
“After almost two weeks of no matches (weather) it was great to get back after it,” Thomsen said via email. “I was really happy with how our #3 doubles team of Laura Barsch and Aubree Blackburn applied what we have been working on in practice. Lucy Stern had a little rust early on, but battled her way through it to have a nice victory over a tough opponent.
“Maya Griffin (of Marquette) and Sam Korpi had a thrilling match at #3 singles. After the girls split the first two sets, we opted for a third set super tiebreak in fear of running into rain and darkness,” he said. “Sam eventually prevailed 11-9 in the tiebreak. I’m hoping these two get a chance to meet during tournament time.”
