SUTTONS BAY — The Marquette Senior High School boys soccer team won all three of its games Saturday to capture the championship at the Weber Invitational held in downstate Suttons Bay, located a few miles north of Traverse City.

MSHS downed Gaylord 1-0 and Harbor Springs 2-0 to qualify for the finals, where Marquette downed Kalkaska 6-1. The team formerly known as the Redmen have won five straight to improve to 8-3 and have a game at Iron Mountain at 6 p.m. EDT Tuesday.

In the championship tilt, the team’s top scorer all fall, Kaleb Chipelewski, produced with a pair of goals and a pair of assists.

“Upon getting to the championship game, the team really responded and they were hungry for the win,” MSHS head coach Dan Salmon said in an email detailing the results. “Winning this game and the whole tournament was a complete team effort.”

Chipelewski opened the scoring by booting in a penalty kick before Henry Wood and Charlie Hrodey scored. Wood was assisted by Indigo Catalano and Ethan Sandstrom, while Hrodey’s was helped by Chipelewski and Miles Hill.

Chipelewski then notched his second goal, with an assist to Andy Brunswick, for a 4-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, Canyon Medina scored with an assist going to Chipelewski, while Ben Wilson rounded out Marquette’s scoring by converting another penalty kick.

Goalkeeper Edan Hautamaki faced one shot each half, only allowing a late goal after the result was all but determined.

MSHS began the day with its narrow victory over Gaylord as Hrodey had the game’s only goal in the first half as he was assisted by Dixon Poggi. Hautamaki made that score hold up as he only faced a single first-half shot.

“The Gaylord game turned out to be a defensive game,” Salmon said. “We controlled a lot of the play in the first half, but Gaylord started gaining control in the second half, even though they did not get a shot on net. Our midfielders did well in this game.”

Hautamaki had his busiest game against Harbor Springs, but still managed to earn a shutout after facing four shots in the first half and three more after the break.

Catalano scored a goal for MSHS in the first half on a free kick, while Hrodey put one in during the second half with an assist going to Seamus White.

“Once we scored the free kick on Harbor Springs, the game turned in our favor and we controlled play for most of it,” Salmon said. “Our freshman, Charlie Hrodey, really stepped up and had a good weekend.”
