Ishpeming Hematites, Manistique Emeralds in Upper Peninsula high school volleyball top 5 rankings

MARQUETTE — A couple of area high school volleyball teams were casualties when a more robust list came out this week in the new Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters’ poll this week.

Last week’s first-ever poll for the sport included almost as many teams on the “others receiving votes” category as in the actual pair of top-fives. There were 10 teams in the pair of top-fives, while nine schools combined made up each list’s others with votes.

With everyone getting a look at who most think are the best, area squads Negaunee, Baraga and Newberry didn’t attract any votes this week.

But still garnering votes are Manistique and Marquette in Divisions 1-3 and Ishpeming and Newberry in Division 4.

The Emeralds remained at No. 2 — though in a tie with Calumet this week — among the bigger schools, while MSHS fell from fourth to the “others” list by one vote.

In Division 4, the Hematites rose from that “honorable mention” list to No. 5, attracting the one extra vote over Newberry, which remained an “other.”

Topping the lists for the second straight week are Kingsford in Divisions 1-3 and Forest Park in D-4.

However, while Forest Park is still unanimous in its poll, the Flivvers have to split its first-place votes with the Copper Kings, each getting two.

In matches this week involving ranked teams playing area teams, tonight’s marquee matchup should be D-4 No. 5 Ishpeming hosting D-1-3 No. 2 Calumet at 6:30 p.m.

Also tonight will be L’Anse hosting D-4 No. 4 Ironwood, Marquette playing at Houghton and Newberry entertaining Newberry.

On Thursday, MSHS entertains Escanaba, Manistique hosts Bark River and Newberry plays at DeTour.

Then on Saturday morning, the Marquette Invitational will include the tourney host and Ishpeming and Manistique among area schools.
