Marquette, Ishpeming split high school softball doubleheader
MARQUETTE — The Marquette Senior High School softball team split a home doubleheader against Ishpeming on Wednesday with the Redettes ready to enter the MHSAA Division 1 district tournament today.
MSHS hosts the four-team district by opening the action at 11 a.m. with a game against Traverse City West. The other district semifinal pits Alpena vs. TC Central at 1 p.m. with the winners to square off for the tourney championship at 3 p.m.
On Wednesday, the Redettes started red hot to pummel Ishpeming 19-4 before the Hematites turned the tables in the nightcap to take an 8-6 victory.
In the opener, Marquette (5-25) had just six hits while committing only one error as Lyndsey Lake got the pitching victory, going two innings and facing 11 batters as she gave up two earned runs on four hits and walking one while she struck out two.
Layla Roman and Jayden Raymond led MSHS batters with three hits apiece, Roman including a triple and Raymond a double.
In Game 2, the Hematites came back by scoring six runs in the sixth inning as the Redettes committed seven errors.
Lake took the loss on the pitching rubber, allowing two runs on four hits over 6 2/3 innings as she fanned nine.
Marquette’s Cece Fuller had a triple, while Raymond and teammates Ady Trapani and Halle Haynes all singled.
