Track records set

WHITEWATER, Wis. — In the final track and field meet ahead of this week’s GLIAC Championships, the Wildcats showed out, as Akirah Venerable set the school record in the 400m hurdles for one of three Northern Michigan University victories, four changes were made inside the top-10 school record book and a dozen personal records were set.

Akirah Venerable highlighted the meet for the Green and Gold, claiming a first-place finish in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:02.99. The finish established a school record in the event that was set just last week.

The wins didn’t stop there for Northern, as two more ‘Cats were able to run to top finishes.

In the 400m, Beverly Harper earned a first-place finish with a time of 58.4 seconds. It was the first collegiate victory for the freshman.

In the 100m hurdles, Ellyse Wolfrath crossed the finish line in 14.41 to best the field.

There were a pair of other podium finishes for the squad from the Lake Superior shores. In the 200m, Jahtivya Williams finished second with a time of 25.92. In the 3000m steeplechase, Emma Sweeney grabbed third at a finishing time of 12:33.20.

The Wildcats had three more finishes inside the top six. Leah Root took fourth in the pole vault, reaching a height of 3.31m while Ciara Ostrenga registered another fourth-place finish in the 400m, crossing at 59.58. Sydney Romps garnered a sixth-place finish in the 200m with a time of 26.22.

In the final tune-up ahead of the GLIAC Championships, which begin today, NMU saw 12 personal records hit throughout the meet.
