Marquette, Negaunee high school baseball teams split 2 very different games

NEGAUNEE — The Marquette and Negaunee high school baseball teams split a doubleheader on Monday in Negaunee, though the Redmen would’ve won the day if the total runs counted for something.

The Miners pulled out a narrow 2-0 victory in the opener before the Redmen regrouped their offense for a big 14-5 victory in Game 2.

But it’s not the margin of victory that counts as MSHS kept its season record even at 6-6.

In the opener, Braiden Noskey twirled a four-hit shutout for Negaunee, scattering a quartet of singles and walking three while he struck out six.

He also found time to beat out one of the Miners’ three hits as he scored one of the game’s only two runs in the second inning.

Negaunee’s other hits were collected by Eli VanBuren, who went 2 for 2. Teammate Hank Tincknell didn’t get a hit, but he did have an RBI and stole a base as he was hit by a pitch.

Evan Gauthier scored Negaunee’s other run as he had walked.

The tough-luck losing hurler for Marquette was Gibson Jezewski, who allowed just two runs on three hits, all singles, as he walked one.

AJ Martin, Isaac Sarles, Easton Miller and Nick Pantti had MSHS hits as Pantti also walked and Martin and Dallas Cobe each stole a base.

In the nightcap, Marquette broke open a close game in the sixth and final inning with eight runs. Before that inning, the Redmen led just 6-5.

Sarles went 3 for 4 as he knocked in two runs and scored twice.

But it was Martin who really collected the RBIs, gaining five of them as he went 2 for 4 while scoring a run.

Miller and Peyton Davis also had two hits each among Marquette’s 13 hits, all of them singles.

Negaunee managed just five hits, which were singles by Gauthier, Howard Johnson, Jed Anderson, Mason Banfield and Ian Engstrom.

Anderson, Banfield and Engstrom had RBIs, while Johnson, Gauthier, Van Buren and Keith Juidici scored runs.

Anderson started and went 4 1/3 innings and was followed by Banfield and Matthew Peters on the mound.

Banfield took the loss as the trio combined to allow 14 runs — but just eight earned — on 13 hits and five walks as they chalked up two K’s.

Jezewski started and went 1 1/3 innings on the mound for Marquette as he was followed by Luke Mead, Cobe, Peterson and Sarles.

Logan Peterson got the win after going two innings. The quintet combined to allow five runs on five hits and seven walks as they struck out three.

The teams traded the lead in the early going, with the Redmen scoring one in the top of the first, but NHS answering with two in the bottom half.

MSHS retook a 3-2 lead in the top of the second only to have the Miners go back on top 4-3 in the bottom of the third.

Marquette then scored three runs in the top of the fourth, keyed by Martin’s two-run single, to take the lead for good.

Negaunee got back within a run in the fifth before MSHS had its big final-inning rally.
