Marquette boys tennis team posts 2-0-1 mark in the last week

MARQUETTE — Despite all of last week’s wintry weather, the Marquette Senior High School boys tennis team not only got to play three matches, but won twice and tied the other.

The Redmen went to Delta County on Wednesday and shut out Gladstone 8-0 before earlier in the afternoon tying Escanaba 4-4. Then on Friday, MSHS hosted Menominee and won 6-2.

Here is a roundup from that action:

Marquette 4, Escanaba 4

On Wednesday in Escanaba, this match was just about as competitive and close as the final tie score would indicate, with five tiebreakers being played, including one match where all three sets were decided that way.

“It was nice to see the sun and courts that weren’t buried under a foot or more of snow,” Marquette head coach Karl Thomsen said in an email. “More importantly, Escanaba provided a great early-season test for our veterans and rookies.”

The marathon match came at No. 2 singles, where the Redmen’s Chase Thomsen prevailed over Escanaba’s Sam Rivera, 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-4).

“Chase Thomsen and Sam Rivera provided the fans with an instant classic,” Karl Thomsen said.

MSHS had to scramble to get its four wins as another of its victories also went three sets, including a tiebreaker set. At No. 3 doubles, Marquette’s Holden Hutter and Bodhi White outlasted the Eskymos’ Vinny Guindon and Nick Challier 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-3.

Marquette’s other wins came at No. 3 singles, where Seppi Camilli beat Matthew Dykema 6-1, 6-3, and at No. 1 doubles, with Keaton Ansell and Isaac Johnson downing Evan St. Peter and Andrew Lord 6-4, 6-3.

One of the Redmen’s losses also included a tiebreaker set when Esky’s Jackson Cousineau and Villads Osterdahl at No. 2 doubles felled MSHS’ Liam McFarren and Andrew King 6-4, 7-6 (8-6).

Marquette 8, Gladstone 0

Later Wednesday in nearby Gladstone, Coach Thomsen was pleased that his team’s mental and physical focus was up for two matches in one day.

A trio of Redmen victories were decided in three sets — Camilli at No. 2 singles dropped Nick Matthews of Gladstone, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4; Austin Beres at No. 4 singles got past the Braves’ Drake Johnson 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-2; and Hutter and White at No. 3 doubles outlasted Matthew Hagebusch and Tyler Soderman 7-5, 5-7, 6-3.

“Austin Beres stepped in at No. 4 singles and had a heckuva battle with the hard-serving Drake Johnson,” Karl Thomsen said. “It was great to see Austin solve the puzzle and scrap out a decisive third set.”

Marquette 6, Menominee 2

On Friday in Marquette, the Redmen were able to hold a home match “thanks to Mother Nature and a couple guys from our shop classes,” Karl Thomsen said.

“The boys are starting to get a feel of when to be aggressive and hunt a ball and when to allow their teammate to play the ball,” he added.

MSHS swept the doubles flights, losing just 10 games in those four matches, including a 6-0, 6-1 victory posted by No. 4 tandem of Abe Kentala and Connor Stade over Dawson Bardowski and Jake Russell, and a 6-3, 6-0 win put up by the No. 2 duo of McFarren and King over Tanner Theurerkauf and Landen Daijenau.

Marquette also got singles wins from No. 3 Elan Chu and No. 4 Caleb Janofski.
