Marquette boys tennis players step up in 5-3 loss vs. Escanaba

MARQUETTE — With regular players from both teams missing, Escanaba was able to take the most advantage to pull out a 5-3 victory over Marquette in a high school boys tennis meet held at the Redmen courts on Monday afternoon.

The match of the day had to be at No. 1 doubles, which not only went to three sets but included a pair of tiebreakers that each went to several extra points.

In the end, the Eskymos’ Evan St. Peter and Vlad Osterdahl outlasted Marquette’s Keaton Ansell and Isaac Johnson 7-6 (10-8), 6-7 (9-11), 6-4.

“It was an interesting match because both teams had some players out,” MSHS head coach Karl Thomsen said about the whole day in an email. “With that being said, it presented some opportunities for others.

“Caden Laurn (of Marquette) and Lucas Weaver (of Escanaba) were two of the fill-ins and both took advantage of the opportunity. They played a whale of a three-set match with Caden winning the last five games of the third set to capture the match.

“It felt like one of those matches that had two winners.”

Their match came at No. 4 singles, with Laurn prevailing 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 6-2.

“At No. 4 doubles, I was excited for the way the team of Abe Kentala and Connor Stade competed,” Thomsen said of his doubles pairing. “Earlier in the year, they had lost to this duo from Escanaba and today they were able to pay them back.”

The payback against Esky’s Reid Brazeau and Connor Howes came to the tune of a score of 6-3, 6-4.

The Redmen also got a victory from the No. 2 doubles tandem of Liam McFarren and Andrew King in a 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 win over the Eskymos’ Andrew Lord and David Romps.

And in another three-set marathon, Escanaba’s Nick Chaillier and Vincent Guindon pulled out a 6-0, 1-6, 6-4 victory over Marquette’s Holden Hutter and Bodhi White.

“I’m looking forward to seeing Escanaba this weekend at the Negaunee Invitational and next week at the (Great Northern Conference meet),” Thomsen said.
