Late comebacks allow Marquette, Westwood to split high school softball doubleheader

NATIONAL MINE — Each team pulled off a seventh-inning comeback for a come-from-behind win as Marquette and Westwood split a high school softball doubleheader at the Patriots’ field in National Mine on Friday.

Westwood scored twice in the bottom of the seventh in the opener for a 15-14 victory, then the Redettes turned the tables in the nightcap.

In that second game, MSHS scored six runs in the top of the seventh after trailing 8-6 after six innings for a 12-10 win.

In Game 1, MSHS trailed by nine runs in the third but fought back, capping off its own comeback with an eight-run sixth.

Halle Haynes led the Redettes with four hits, including a double, while teammate Lyndsey Lake also doubled. And Marquette’s Anna Melka, Ady Trapani and Piper Andrews each had a single.

Cece Fuller took the loss for MSHS, allowing eight runs on 10 hits while walking none and striking out six.

In Game 2, Lake earned the pitching victory, going all seven innings and allowing 10 runs on 15 hits and one walk while fanning six.

Andrews led MSHS hitters with a seventh-inning triple as Lake, Fuller and Layla Roman all had doubles for the Redettes and Alexa Whaley a single.
