Baraga High School girls track and field team wins trio of events at Upper Peninsula Division 3 regional in Wakefield

WAKEFIELD — The Baraga girls and boys track and field teams won three events at the MHSAA Upper Peninsula Division 3 regional while qualifying a total of 11 times for the upcoming U.P. Finals.

The D-3 regional was held at Wakefield on Thursday.

All three of the Vikings’ wins came in the girls meet, where BHS qualified nine times and scored 29 points to finish fourth.

The Baraga boys scored six points and finished in a tie for seventh while qualifying twice for the finals.

At each of the Division 3 regionals, the top four finishers in individual events and best two in relays get to advance to the U.P. Finals, which will be held in Kingsford on June 3.

A pair of the Vikings winners actually qualified for the finals in two events.

Ellie Delene won the high jump by clearing 4 feet, 10 inches, winning a three-way tiebreaker for the top spot, while she also placed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles in 19.18 seconds.

Teammate Corina Jahfetson won the discus with a toss of 106-0 and also placed third in the shot put with a heave of 28-1.

Baraga’s other winner was Kylie Michaelson, who took the shot put with a heave of 31-0.

The Vikings’ Reese Holley was second in the discus with 86-9, while Logan DesRochers finished third twice — in the pole vault after clearing 5-6 and in the 3,200 run in 15:08.94.

The Baraga girls’ other top-four finisher was Makenna Hendrickson, who placed fourth in the 200 in 28.63.

Jahfeston, Michaelson and Hendrickson just missed another finals qualification after they joined Jaycee Larson to place third in the 400 relay. They finished in 57.04 seconds, 1.04 seconds behind runner-up and last finals qualifier Lake Linden-Hubbell.

In the boys meet, Baraga’s Nate Sterbenz was second in the discus in 127-4, losing out to Bessemer’s Neal Rand by just nine inches.

And the Vikings’ Nolan Hendrickson was third in the boys’ high jump after clearing 5-8 and losing a tiebreaker to LL-H’s Mason Holzberger for second place.

LL-H won a competitive girls meet with 45 points, with Dollar Bay second with 36 and Ontonagon third with 34 just in front of Baraga.

After the Vikings came Bessemer with 25, Chassell five, Wakefield-Marenisco and Ewen-Trout Creek with four each and Watersmeet with three.

Bessemer won the boys team title with 62 as LL-H had 45, DB 37, W-M 13, Chassell 10, Ontonagon eight and Baraga tying Watersmeet with six apiece.
