Marquette Redmen baseball team sweeps Gwinn, 17-0 and 16-1

MARQUETTE — Marquette had relative ease as Gwinn High School gets its baseball program off to a start in a doubleheader played Wednesday in Marquette.

The Redmen scored 17-0 and 16-1 victories, each lasting four innings.

In the opener, MSHS pitchers Isaac Sarles and Gib Jezewski each threw two innings to combine for the victory as they allowed two hits and a walk while striking out a total of 10.

Marquette scored five runs in the first inning, nine in the second and three in the third, using 13 hits, six walks and six Gwinn errors to produce its offense.

Jezewski and Logan Peterson each went 3 for 3 while drawing a walk, Jezewski pounding out a triple as he had three RBIs, scored twice and stole a base. Peterson had an RBI, scored three times and stole two bases.

Ian Sheltrow was 2 for 2, including a double, with three RBIs and two runs as he even found time to be hit by a pitch.

Easton Miller added a double to the winning cause as he had an RBI, scored twice, stole a base and was also hit by a pitch.

Full names for Gwinn players weren’t available.

In the nightcap, Nick Pantti pitched the first two innings for MSHS, with Sheltrow and Chase Niemi adding an inning each as they combined to allow three hits and a walk while fanning seven.

The Redmen, who had 14 hits while using four walks and four errors, scored eight times in the opening inning, building a 16-0 lead before the Modeltowners scored their lone run of the day in the top of the fourth.

Peterson and Sheltrow had nearly identical batting lines, each going 3 for 3 with three runs scored and two stolen bases. The only difference was Peterson getting two RBIs and Sheltrow one.

Jezewski was 2 for 3, while Miller again doubled for the only extra-base hit of the game. Both those players also had an RBI and run.

Sarles might’ve only been 1 for 3, but he finished with five RBIs.

While Dallas Cobe stole two bases, Jake Toyras was twice hit by a pitch and had two RBIs and two runs. Each of those players also had a single.

Marquette is scheduled to play at the Boyne Invitational on Saturday before going to Kingsford on Monday.
