MARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan University alpine ski team used home hill advantage to help win U.S. Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association Midwest Regional titles by both its men’s and women’s teams last weekend.

The event was held at Marquette Mountain as the titles send each Wildcats squad to the USCSA National Championships to be held from March 6-11 at Mammoth Mountain in Mammoth Lakes, California.

“We had a lot of good results,” NMU head coach Erik Lundteigen said. “It was so nice to race on our home hill. We were able to race in front of many friends and family, which is always a good thing.”

He was also pleased with the support the teams received from fellow Northern students and the Marquette-area community, which he credited for helping motivate his skiers.

And he also gave a “shout-out” to the Marquette Mountain staff for accommodating the numerous skiers, putting on a good event and keeping conditions “very good.”

The local resort is also where these NMU teams train throughout the season.

With low scores winning, the Northern women had the closer competition, totaling 25 points as St. Olaf (Minnesota) was runner-up with 29. Minnesota-Twin Cities was a distant third with 80.

For the men, NMU had just 15 points as St. Olaf was again runner-up with 39 while Minnesota-Duluth came in third with 68.

The Wildcats and St. Olaf advanced to the nationals as the top two finishers, while Minnesota-Twin Cities and Minnesota-Duluth also received wild card invitations.

Individually for NMU, Brad Seaborg won the team’s titles, capturing both the men’s slalom and giant slalom championships. Men’s teammate Aaron Grzelak was second in the slalom and Northern’s Reed Heathman was third in the men’s GS.

Seaborg and Grzelak, along with NMU men’s teammate Keaton Jones and Northern women skiers Ainsley Kirk, Maddy Stern and Jacey Johnson, are all Marquette Senior High School graduates.

For the NMU women, Reagan Olli had the top finish of second place in the slalom, while Northern’s Ella Wichert was third. Kirk topped NMU skiers in the women’s GS in fourth.
