Republic-Michigamme Hawks boys basketball team falls to Bessemer Speed Boys 50-36
REPUBLIC — Bessemer built a healthy first-half lead and held off Republic-Michigamme in the second half for a 50-36 high school boys basketball victory at the Hawks’ gym on Tuesday night.
R-M (1-8) got 10 points from Samuel Dyer, including six in the first half, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Speed Boys from building an 18-7 lead after one quarter and 29-15 at halftime.
Each team scored the same number of points in the second half, 21, which wasn’t enough to get the Hawks close.
R-M’s Jacob Erickson added nine points, Kenneth Ambuehl eight and Fisher Raisanen six. Ambuehl and Raisanen each knocked down a pair of 3-pointers, the only ones made by the host squad.
Tommy Trudgeon led a long-range attack by Bessemer (3-8) as he sank a trio of triples and scored 18 points. He also made 5 of 5 free throws as the Speed Boys sank 7 of 8 altogether.
Gabe Harju added eight points for BHS, including a pair of 3s as Bessemer made seven triples in all.
The Hawks host Dollar Bay at 6 p.m. Monday, part of their four-game homestand.
