Northern Michigan University Wildcats track & field team wins Lake Michigan Open

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Northern Michigan University women’s track and field team won the Lake Michigan Open held at Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday.

Just the Wildcats’ second meet of the indoor season, NMU scored 185 points to 102 for St. Norbert and 98 for the host Rangers.

Three Northern athletes accounted for four wins — Ellyse Wolfrath in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.32 seconds and the 55 dash in 7.42, Leah Root in the pole vault by clearing 11-feet-3.75, and Madi Szymanski taking the 3,000 in 10:04.99.

The Wildcats swept the podium and took nine of the top 10 places in the 3,000 as NMU’s Emily Sterling was runner-up in 10:52.04 and Negaunee High School product Talon Prusi of Northern was third in 11:00.69.

Other top-three podium finishes for NMU were turned in by Akirah Venerable, second in the long jump in 18-2.5; Jacqueline Smith, second in the high jump in 5-1; Rebecca Lane, third in the pole vault by clearing 10-10; Alizabeth Little, third in the shot put with 33-5.25; Sydney Romps, second in the 55 hurdles in 9.33; Jahtivya Williams, second in the 55 dash in 7.52; Ahna Larson, second in the 400 in 1:01.37; Beverley Harper, third in the 800 in 2:28.35; Lily Majestic, second in the mile in 5:29.57; and the Wildcats’ relay of Crystal Walker, Harper, Roman Menhart and Teiolla Harvey, third in the 4-by-400 in 4:23.46.

Up next for the Wildcats is the Jets Pizza Invitational hosted by Saginaw Valley State in downstate University Center on Friday and Saturday. The following weekend, NMU hosts its Wildcat, Cardinal, Warrior — WCW — Meet at the Superior Dome on Saturday, Feb. 4.
