Northern Michigan University swimmers, divers set marks at Calvin Invitational

GRAND RAPIDS -- Three women's relays and men's swimmer Ryan Lund had the Northern Michigan University swimming and diving teams' most noteworthy accomplishments at the three-day, seven-school Calvin College Invitational that ended Saturday in Grand Rapids.

Both Wildcat teams finished second to Grand Valley State in the team race.

The NMU men lost by just 51.5 points as they scored 1,811 to GVSU's 1,862.5. Findlay was third with 1,547 as host Calvin was fourth, Grove City College fifth and Kalamazoo College sixth.

The Northern women were also a solid runner-up, scoring 1,909.5 points to the Lakers' 2,129.5. Findlay was again a distant third with 1,427.5, followed by Calvin, Indiana Wesleyan, Grove City and Kalamazoo.

Lund broke the NMU men's team record in the 50-yard butterfly when he clocked 22.29 seconds on Saturday.

Northern's women set a pair of Calvin pool records, while a third relay team qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships.

The 200 freestyle relay of Michaela Nelson, Joanne Arbic, Donna Hannig and Olivia Haerr clocked 1 minute, 33.83 seconds on Thursday to qualify for the NCAAs.

Meanwhile, pool records were set by the Wildcats' 200 medley relay of Camilla Carbone, Zoe DeKievit, Meritxell Font-Cantarero and Haerr that finished in 1:43.17 on Friday and the 400 free relay of Nelson, Nadia Helm, Pilar Perello-Ferrer and Haerr that finished in 3:25.39 on Saturday.

The next action for NMU swimmers are at the CSCAA Open Water Collegiate Nationals on Dec. 18, while their next regular meet is Jan. 14 at home against Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

On Thursday at Calvin, Jenna Joerger won the women's 200 individual medley in 2:02.97, while Nelson tied for third in the 50 free in 23.78.

And Carbone, KeKievit, Font-Cantarero and Haerr won the women's 400 medley relay in 3:46.07.

On Friday, NMU's Daniel Lopez-Aponte won the men's 400 IM in 3:54.78, while Nelson was second in the women's 200 free in 1:52.35 and De Kievit second in the women's 100 breaststroke in 1:03.79.

Northern's Abbie Harned had an NCAA Finals qualifying score of 396.95 points in women's 1-meter diving, a score she'll need twice. The men's Tobie Stiles was second in the 3-meter diving with 440.20.

And Nelson, Hannig, Joerger and Helm won the women's 800 free relay in 7:34.74.

On Saturday, Carbone won and Joerger was second in the women's 200 backstroke in 2:00.39 and 2:02.77, respectively.

Erikas Kapocius won the men's 200 back in 1:46.91.

Nelson was second in the women's 100 free in 51.19, while DeKievit was second in the women's 200 breast in 2:18.18.

Font-Cantarero won the women's 200 fly in 2:02.68, while Felipe Lemos took the men's 200 fly in 1:51.01.

Stiles won the men's 1-meter diving in 463.10 points.
