Ishpeming’s Lola Korpi wins Tracy Strom girls cross country title

ISHPEMING — Lola Korpi of Ishpeming won the girls race by nearly 40 seconds at the Tracy Strom Invitational high school cross country meet held at Al Quaal Recreation Area in Ishpeming on Sept. 29.

Korpi ran the five-kilometer (3.1-mile) course in 20 minutes, 36.9 seconds, beating out runner-up Tessa Rautiola of Houghton, who finished in 21:15.5.

The course is considered one of the toughest that high school runners take on all year, according to Hematites head coach Shay Korpi, because of its hills and terrain.

With Houghton winning the girls’ team title and Hancock second, Calumet third and Negaunee fourth, the other area runners to finish in the top 10 were Endla Harris of Negaunee, sixth in 22:24.0; and Retta Boburka of Westwood, eighth in 23:01.0.

The Miners’ Judge Anderson just missed winning the boys race, finishing runner-up in 18:05.5, about two seconds behind Houghton’s Cyrus Hamlin, who clocked 18:03.4.

Jeffers won that team crown, followed by Houghton, Negaunee and Westwood.

Two other Negaunee runners also cracked the top 10 — James Dank was eighth in 18:47.3 and Simon Jaklin ninth in 18:50.0.
