Hailey Bolander, Walter Ylitalo lead Northern Michigan University Wildcats golfers at season-ending tourney

AUGUSTA — Hailey Bolander led the women’s team and Walter Ylitalo the men’s team for Northern Michigan University at the season-ending Panther Invitational college golf tournament hosted by Davenport last weekend.

Bolander tied for 14th individually as the Wildcat women finished fifth among nine teams.

Ylitalo tied for 16th in the men’s event as Northern came in seventh among 10 squads.

This finishes the fall season for both teams.

Here is a rundown at last weekend’s events:

Bolander leads NMU

women

Bolander, a freshman, shots rounds of 81 on Saturday and 76 on Sunday for a 157 total, or 13-over-par and a tie for 14th place on the Stonehedge Golf Club North course in Augusta.

Sophomore teammate Maya Hunter was next for the Wildcats with 86 and 75 for 161, good for 22nd place, while juniors Paxton Johnson and Annie Pietila each finished with 165 to tie for 26th. Johnson, an Escanaba High School graduate, had rounds of 82 and 83, while Pietila reversed it with 83 and 82.

The Wildcats’ team was rounded out by senior Abbie Claire Boozer with 87-80–167, a tie for 30th. Playing as an individual was Northern sophomore Maggie Pietila, who shot 89-90–179 and a tie for 49th.

Several of the highlights for NMU on the opening day were the entire team breaking 90 despite windy conditions, along with Hunter making a birdie on a 500-yard, par-5 hole.

On the second day, Hunter improved by 11 strokes from her opening round without any holes worse than a bogey.

With NMU totaling 645 on rounds of 332 and 313, Ferris State won the team title with 605.

Ylitalo paces NMU men

Ylitalo is a sophomore who put together a pair of 75s on Saturday and Sunday at the Stoatin Brae Golf Club in Augusta.

His 8-over-par 150 total tied for 16th place as the Wildcats finished with 615 on consistent rounds of 307 and 308.

Next for Northern was junior Russel Sprecher, who had 74 and 77 for 151 and a tie for 22nd, while junior Eric Yun had 77-76–163 to tie for 26th.

Westwood High School graduate and NMU freshman Tyler Annala had rounds of 81 and 80 for 161, or 47th place, while senior Scott Spyra shot 81-85–166 for a tie for 54th.

Playing as an individual was Wildcats redshirt freshman Joseph Luke, a Marquette Senior High School grad, who had 87-82–169 to tie for 57th.

Among highlights for NMU on the first day was Ylitalo playing the front nine in 1-under-par and Spyra making three birdies.

On the second day, Yun made three birdies on the back nine, while Sprecher played the back nine in even-par.

Ferris State won the men’s title with 574.

The Wildcats finished ahead of Lewis, LSSU and Notre Dame College of Ohio.
