MARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan University volleyball team is in the midst of a busy three-day stretch to open the regular season tonight at Vandament Arena when the Wildcats host the NMU Open.

Northern plays four matches in the space of 48 hours after facing NCAA Division I Central Michigan in an exhibition match last weekend on Mackinac Island. The Chippewas won that non-regular season match in three straight sets.

All four opponents are Wildcats playing at the NMU Open are from outside Michigan — the Wildcats faced Minnesota-Crookston on Thursday evening, then face Cedarville (Ohio) at 1 p.m. today, Upper Iowa at 7 p.m. today and Bemidji State (Minnesota) at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Seven schools are participating, with the others being Lake Superior State and Central Oklahoma. A total of 14 matches are listed after a look at the other participating schools’ websites — two today and six each on Friday and Saturday.

Northern has played Upper Iowa six times before, with no series record available, but the Peacocks won their most recent matchup, again with no year available.

And the Wildcats are 5-1 against Bemidji, with NMU winning in three sets last season at the UIndy Invite.
