Negaunee Miners girls tennis team gets off to fast start with win at West Iron County

IRON RIVER — Even when somebody loses, Negaunee gets a win.

The Miners opened not only the girls tennis season, but the area high school sports season for all schools across all sports with a 7-1 victory at West Iron County on Monday afternoon.

In the only match Negaunee lost, Miners’ No. 1 singles player Jordan Enright did win a set to force the match to three sets. WIC’s Aubrey Bice won 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

All other matches were two-set sweeps by Negaunee, including a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash at No. 4 doubles by Autumn Ring and Paityn Brunette.

Others were closer, like Aubrey Johnson winning at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-3 over the Wykons’ Seanna Stine.

No. 3 Rheana Nelson and No. 4 Lilliana Saunders were also Miners’ singles victors, while Negaunee doubles triumphs also were notched by No. 1 Stella Harris and Maddie Frustaglio, No. 2 Sage Juntti and Olivia Lunseth and No. 3 Madalynn Peters and Kina Salmela.

The Miners get in another road match this week, playing at Westwood at 11 a.m. Wednesday, before taking nearly a week off before hosting Ishpeming next Tuesday.
