Half-dozen Northern Michigan University National Training Site weightlifters medal at nationals in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS — Weightlifters from the National Training Site at Northern Michigan University earned multiple medals at a pair of national tournaments in Las Vegas recently.

They competed at the Junior and the Under-25 national championships, part of USA Weightlifting’s National Championships week that ran through Sunday.

A half-dozen NMU athletes earned medals for top-three finishes between the two tourneys.

They include Juniors champions Lander Wells and Ryland Shriver in men’s competition, along with Ella Holden in women’s and William Heller in men’s.

In U25, medalists were women’s champion Jayda Jenkins, along with men’s competitor Calvin La.

In all, 10 NMU NTS weightlifters placed at three competitions, which also included the Senior Championships.

Junior Championships

Competing at 96 kilograms (211.6 pounds), Wells lifted a total of 289 kg (637.1 lbs.) to win the overall title. He also earned gold for both his 130-kg (286.6-lb.) lift in the snatch and 159-kg (350.5-lb.) lift in the clean and jerk.

Jayda Jenkins

Shriver, competing at 109 kg (240.3 lbs.), also swept to the best totals in all three categories with a total of 347 kg (765.0 lbs.), snatch of 152 kg (335.1 lbs.) and clean and jerk of 195 kg (429.9 lbs.).

Holden competed at 55 kg (121.3 lbs.) and swept silver medals in all three categories. She totaled 169 kg (372.6 lbs.) with a snatch of 76 kg (167.6 lbs.) and clean and jerk of 93 kg (205.0 lbs.).

Heller competed at 102 kg (224.9 lbs.) and was third in all his categories — 287 kg (632.7 lb.) total, 129 kg (284.4 lb.) snatch and 158 kg (348.3 lb.) clean and jerk.

Other placers from NMU were Zadie Nix at 76 kg (167.6 lbs.), eighth with 162 kg (357.1 lbs.) total; and Dominick Basso at 81 kg (178.6 lbs.), 27th place for 219 kg (482.8 lbs.) total.

U25 Championships

Jenkins competed at 55 kg and lifted a total of 160 kg (352.7 lbs.) with a winning 94 kg (207.2 lb.) lift in the clean and jerk.

La’s bronze-medal performance at 73 kg (160.9 lbs.) was for lifting 250 kg (551.2 lbs.) total, including a silver medal-worthy 115 kg (253.5 lbs.) in snatch.

In addition, NMU’s Hannah Alvis, competing at 71 kg (156.5 lbs.), was 10th with a 160 kg (352.7 lbs.) total.

Senior Championships

The Wildcats’ lone placer was Lukas Zielke at 67 kg (147.7 lbs.) in fifth place with a 249 kg (549.0 lbs.) total.
