Marquette Redmen’s Owen Riipi, Manistique Emeralds’ Nora Cunningham medalists at Wawonowin high school golf meet

CHAMPION — Owen Riipi earned boys medalist honors after he shot 38 to lead his Marquette Senior High School team to victory at the Negaunee Kiwanis golf meet held at the Wawonowin Country Club on Tuesday.

The Redmen totaled 160, five strokes better than Calumet, as Riipi’s teammates Kaleb Chipelewski and Adam Heikkila each contributed 40 and Caleb Beerman had 42.

Chipelewski was third and Heikkila fourth, based on the tiebreaker, while Beerman just missed the cut for the top 10 by one stroke and tied for 11th.

In the girls meet, despite Nora Cunningham’s medalist score of 45, Manistique was edged out for the team title by a single stroke by the host Miners, 217-218.

Negaunee was led by Rachel Niskanen, who finished second with 46, while teammate Marisa Hird was seventh with 53.

Also contributing to the Miners’ overall score was Daylyn Drew with 58, good for 13th.

For Manistique, Mattisyn Hunkele was fourth with 48, Macy Green 12th with 57 and Jenna Jack tied for 22nd with 68.

Back in the boys meet, Riipi edged out Calumet’s Lowell Torola for medalist by one stroke as Torola shot 39 and teammate Danny Loukus tied Chipelewski and Heikkila with 40, though Loukus fell to fifth on a tiebreaker.

The rest of the top 10 all shot 41, again with tiebreakers determining their final place. Westwood’s Tanner Annala was sixth, Houghton’s Ryan Vlahos seventh, Iron Mountain’ Cooper Pigeon eighth, Westwood’s Tyler Annala ninth and Hancock’s Jackson Sintkowski 10th.

Westwood finished fourth with 173, two strokes behind third-place Houghton.

One of the next highest finishers from an area school actually didn’t figure in his team’s score. That’s because Marquette’s Jace Moore, who shot 43 to tie for 14th, was actually the Redmen’s fifth-best scorer.

Also shooting 43 was Negaunee’s Gerald Johnson, who led his team to sixth place with 181, while teammate Corbin Erva had 44 to tie for 18th.

Manistique finished eighth with 189, paced by Landen Dougherty with 46, while Gwinn was ninth with 248 and led by Travis Johnson with 60.

Among the girls, Marquette’s Abby Luke matched Niskanen with 46 but lost a tiebreaker to finish third.

The Redettes were also third among the teams with 228 as MSHS’ Zoe Smith was sixth with 52, Ella Pond 14th with 59 and Abby Hellman tied for 25th with 71.

Westwood finished sixth with 261 and was paced by eighth-place Laci Moffatt with 53 and 10th-place Renee Blanck with 55.

The Patriots’ Kaitlyn Williams contributed 72 and Janna Schom had 81.

Gwinn didn’t have a team score, but was led by Madeline Wixtrom with 74.

Two other golfers from outside the area also had top-10 finishes — IM’s Reidet Husing was fifth with 48 and Houghton’s Keegan Leonard ninth with 54.

Most of the area teams will be back in action this morning. Negaunee, Westwood and Gwinn will be at a West PAC meet at the Portage Lake Golf Course outside Houghton, while Marquette will be at the Escanaba Invitational, which is a Great Northern Conference meet.
