MARQUETTE — Almost no changes took place in the second-to-last weekly high school basketball polls that were released on Tuesday by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.
That includes a half-dozen area teams, none of whom changed positions this week, the final week for a girls poll with district tournaments taking place.
One more boys poll will be conducted next week as their districts are then.
Baraga (18-1) won twice last week to hold onto the No. 1 spot in the girls Division 4 voting over No. 2 Carney-Nadeau. The Vikings also continued to receive three of the four first-place votes.
The Munising girls (15-5), who split a pair of games in the past week, continued receiving a single vote and were still on the “Other receiving votes” list in D-4.
For the girls’ Divisions 1-3, Negaunee (15-5) won its only game last week and remained fifth.
In boys rankings, Westwood (14-3) didn’t play last week and held onto No. 3 in Divisions 1-3, while Marquette (8-8) split a pair of games and continued to receive a single vote in the same poll.
In Division 4, Munising (15-2) split its two games last week and went from third place alone to a tie for third with Ewen-Trout Creek.
Two area squads also remained in the top 10 in the Associated Press statewide polls, like the UPSSA’s released each Tuesday.
Baraga moved up a spot to fifth in the Division 4 girls rankings with 54 voting points, one spot behind Carney-Nadeau as Portland St. Patrick (19-0) is No. 1, Fowler (17-3) is No. 2, and Athens (19-1) is No. 3.
Munising remained eighth in the Division 4 boys ratings with 33 votes.
The Munising girls, who were in the “others” list last week in Division 4, failed to receive any votes this week.
