Northern Michigan University alpine ski teams sweeps titles at Giants Ridge

BIWABIK, Minn. — The Northern Michigan University alpine ski teams swept to men’s and women’s overall titles at the U.S. Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association’s Giants Ridge Invitational over the weekend.

NMU swept to gold medals in Saturday’s slalom competition.

“The team is coming together,” Northern head coach Erik Lundteigen said. “We have had some great practice sessions.”

Reagan Olli led the Northern women, finishing third, while teammate Ainsley Kirk, a Marquette Senior High School graduate, was fifth, Ella Wichert sixth and Emily Creek 10th.

Garrett Lundteigen won the men’s slalom, while Colin DeHart was third and Andrew Truman and Will Blackmer both broke into the top 10.

In the giant slalom on Sunday, the Northern women again won as Kirk led the Wildcats in third, Creek was sixth and Olli eighth.

The NMU men were runners-up in slalom, with Garrett Lundtiegen coming in third and Truman, Blackmer and DeHart also cracking the top 10.

Next up for the Wildcats is the USCSA Spirit Mountain race near Duluth, Minnesota, on Feb. 12-13.
