MARQUETTE — A half-dozen area teams saw little movement in their positions in this week’s Upper Peninsula high school basketball polls conducted by the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association and released each Tuesday.

A seventh team, the Negaunee boys, fell from the ranks of receiving votes, however.

The Miners were the first team out of the top five in Divisions 1-3 last week with two votes, but this week failed to receive any votes after splitting a pair of games last week as they are now 8-4.

Westwood (8-2), which beat the Miners just over a week ago, rose a position in that same D 1-3 boys rankings from fifth to fourth after adding a pair of wins last week over West Iron County and Iron Mountain.

The Patriots exchanged spots with Jeffers despite the Jets winning all three of their games in the past week.

Marquette is also edging closer to that top five with three votes, just one back of Jeffers. The Redmen are a modest 3-4 after losing at Petoskey and winning at Divisions 1-3 No. 3 Kingsford last week.

In Division 4 boys, Munising (11-1) is the lone area representative, staying put at No. 4 after the Mustangs won twice last week.

In girls rankings, Baraga (12-1) holds the No. 1 ranking in Division 4 for the third straight week after the Vikings downed Wakefield-Marenisco and Ironwood by hefty margins last week.

Munising also remained in the “others” list after going 2-1 last week.

In Divisions 1-3, Negaunee (11-4) rose a “half” spot this week, going from a tie for fifth into fifth alone after winning its lone game last week, a 55-31 victory over IM.

The weekly Associated Press statewide polls weren’t available by Mining Journal press time Monday night.

Among the big games involving area teams and ranked teams in the next few days, the Marquette boys play at Westwood tonight.

On Friday, the Redmen host Divisions 1-3 No. 1 Menominee and Newberry hosts D-4 co-No. 1 Rudyard.

For the girls, Baraga hosts L’Anse on Thursday, which is when Newberry travels to D-4 co-No. 4 Rudyard.

On Friday, Gwinn hosts Hancock, which is on the “others” list in Divisions 1-3.
