Marquette Redmen hockey team rolls past Negaunee, 8-0

MARQUETTE — With a big set of games downstate coming next, the Marquette Senior High School hockey team didn’t let up on the gas in an 8-0 victory over Negaunee on Thursday at Lakeview Arena in Marquette.

The Redmen (13-3-1) held a decisive 56-4 shots on goal advantage in a game that ended during the third period due to the eight-goal rule.

MSHS wanted to end a two-game losing streak after it fell to Livonia Stevenson 3-2 in overtime and to Byron Center 4-1 at the Traverse City North-South Showcase last weekend.

Next week’s games will be at the Michigan Public High School Showcase in Chelsea. Marquette faces host Chelsea at 6 p.m. Thursday, Lansing-area Capital City at 3:30 p.m. Friday and Bloomfield Hills at 9:30 a.m. next Saturday.

“I think our team speed, puck movement and size was what really helped us create so many scoring chances and not giving up many,” MSHS head coach Doug Garrow said in an email about the Negaunee game. “Negaunee’s goalie Ryan Kerkela had a real solid game.”

Kerkela finished with 48 saves, including 21 in each of the first two periods, while MSHS netminder Anna Byczek needed to make just four stops.

The Redmen’s Cole Ranta and Caleb Fries each scored twice, while teammate Brayden Grange tallied three assists as Jacob Garrow, Jack Sides and Drew Dellies each contributed two assists.

Scoring single goals were Kody Moyer, Theo Adams, Colin Nemacheck and Ethan Phillips, while getting single assists were Joe DeMattia, Tucker Welch and Rylan Ragusett.
