MARQUETTE — It was a quiet week among the top teams in Upper Peninsula boys and girls high school basketball.

There was little movement among the top-five teams in this week’s U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association poll, which was released today, especially considering it’s only the second week of the voting season.

That included the four area teams that are in the top five, which held their spots.

The Marquette boys, which had been in the “others receiving votes” category a week ago, fell to 1-3 with a loss at Escanaba and didn’t receive votes this week.

Westwood’s boys and girls squads remained in place in Divisions 1-3, the boys in fourth and girls fifth.

The Patriots boys defeated Iron Mountain 67-46 last week to improve to 4-1, while the girls beat Gladstone 56-40 to move to a perfect 4-0.

The Baraga girls stayed in third in Division 4 despite splitting a pair of games as the Vikings are now 7-1. BHS drubbed Watersmeet 60-18 before falling at Divisions 1-3 No. 2 Houghton 59-48.

And Munising’s boys remain fourth in Division 4 with a 5-0 record after getting a 69-30 win at North Dickinson and 77-43 victory over Rapid River.

There was again no Associated Press statewide poll released this week, apparently with a mix-up on when it would start, which likely should now be next week.

In games involving top teams and area teams for the boys, Westwood hosts Gladstone tonight, while Ishpeming is at Marquette on Wednesday.

On Thursday, Munising hosts Forest Park, while Republic-Michigamme entertains Division 4 vote-getter Wakefield-Marenisco.

And on Friday, Marquette plays at Divisions 1-3 No. 1 Menominee.

For the girls, Baraga is at Bessemer tonight, while on Wednesday, Newberry is at Division 4 No. 4 Pickford.

On Friday, Munising gets its chance to crack the top five if it can pull off a home upset of Division 4 No. 1 Carney-Nadeau.

The same could be true for Marquette as it entertains Divisions 1-3 No. 1 Calumet, also on Friday.

And also on Friday night, a Divisions 1-3 clash ensues with No. 5 Westwood traveling to No. 2 Houghton.
