DEEPHAVEN, Minn. -- Northern Michigan University senior Trevor Cosgrove won his third CCHA Defenseman of the Week already this season after the Wildcats swept nonconference opponent Colgate over the weekend.
Cosgrove, a transfer from Colgate over the past offseason, recorded four points in NMU's 4-2 and 6-3 victories at the Berry Events Center. He led NMU in shots both nights, combining for 13 shots on net.
The Exeter, New Hampshire, native also won this award on Dec. 6 and Nov. 8.
This time around, Cosgrove had a team-high plus-3 on-ice rating on Friday, when he recorded a career-high three points with the first two goals of the game and an assist on his team's final tally. He also registered two blocked shots.
He picked up his other point, the game-winning goal, during the second period of Saturday's contest.
He was named first star in Friday's game and third star Saturday.
Cosgrove is fifth for the Wildcats with 17 points that includes six goals this season. He also has a power-play goal, game-winning goal and 17 blocked shots.
With Colgate, he played 131 games in four seasons, totaling 43 points, while missing just three games during the span.
In his final year in junior hockey, he played with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs, when he was named a British Columbia Hockey League Second Team all-star.
The Wildcats, 12-8-1 overall and 6-7-1 in the CCHA, remain home this weekend as they face one of their most difficult tasks of the season by hosting first-place Minnesota State-Mankato at 6:37 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights.
The Mavericks (20-4) received 42 of 50 first-place votes and are ranked No. 1 in the DCU/USCHO.com top 20 national poll this week. The only other CCHA team ranked is Michigan Tech (10-8-1) in 19th.
Minnesota State picked up the other two weekly league honors on Monday as junior Nathan Smith was named CCHA Forward of the Week and senior Dryden McKay the CCHA Goaltender of the Week after the Mavericks swept seventh-place Ferris State, outscoring the Bulldogs a combined 14-1.
