Marquette sweeps home triangular swimming and diving meets
MARQUETTE — Four Marquette athletes — two boys and two girls — were four-time winners as the Redmen and Redettes swept to title in a three-team high school swimming and diving meet held at the MSHS pool on Saturday.
The Redmen boys scored 166 points as runner-up Houghton had 104 and Sault Ste. Marie 57. The Redette girls totaled 147 as the Soo was second with 122 and the Gremlins had 46.
Both teams are now 5-0 this season.
“It was the best competition all three teams have seen this year,” MSHS head coach Nate McFarren said about the traditional Upper Peninsula powers that participated. “On the boys side, depth and talent continues to be too much for their opponents.
“The girls were successful too, with great swims and (team) depth as well.”
The Marquette coach was also happy to see fast races translate into U.P. Finals qualifying times, too. The standings listed every individual swimming event with at least three finals qualifiers except one, and that one — the boys 100-yard butterfly — still had two qualifiers.
“It was great to see some preliminary (qualifying) times,” McFarren said. “I am hoping those benchmarks will work as a ‘springboard’ to our success at U.P. Finals. I was very impressed with where our athletes are.”
The quartet of four-time MSHS winners each won two individual events and two relays.
The Marquette boys were particularly dominant, winning 11 of the 12 events, including all three relays. Four-time winning boys were Colin VanderSchaaf and Liam McFarren, each part of the team’s victorious 200 medley and 200 free relays.
Joining VanderSchaaf and McFarren in the 200 medley relay was Andrew King and Maverick Baldwin, while also on the 200 free relay was Baldwin and Bobby Caron.
VanderSchaaf also took the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke, while McFarren won the 100 freestyle and 200 free.
The Redmen’s third winning relay was the 400 free relay with King, Alex Gooch, Sevi Voigt and Andon Buyarski.
Other MSHS boys individual event winners were King in the 100 backstroke, Baldwin in the 50 free, Gooch in the 100 butterfly and Voigt in the 500 free.
For the Marquette girls, Delaney Marchiol and Grace Sobczak each won four times, including legs on their team’s winning 200 medley and 400 free relays.
Joining the pair in the 200 medley relay was Ella Whalen and Kelsey Glover, while the other legs of the 400 free relay were swum by Whalen and Hannah Winn.
Marchiol added victories in the 100 fly and 200 free, while Sobczak also won the 200 IM and 500 free.
Whalen also won the 100 back and Maija Talvensaari the 100 breast as Marquette triumphed in eight events, including a pair of relays.
Marquette has a quick turnaround as their home meet against Gladstone originally scheduled for Wednesday has been moved up to 3:30 p.m. today. But the MSHS squads won’t have another meet until Wednesday, Jan. 5, at Ishpeming-Negaunee at the Negaunee High School pool.
