Marquette boys, girls swimmers sweep Kingsford

KINGSFORD — Led by Liam McFarren, Colin VanderSchaaf and Andon Buyarski, the Marquette boys swimming and diving team won at Kingsford 120-45 on Thursday.

Elena Henry accounted for a pair of victories as the Redette girls won by a much closer score of 99-70 over the Flivvers.

Both MSHS teams improved to 3-0.

“It was a great day in the pool overall for Marquette,” head coach Nathan McFarren said in an email. “There were some great first-time swims and many lifetime bests.”

McFarren, VanderSchaaf and Buyarski each accounted for three wins for the MSHS boys, with the first two winning two individual events and Buyarski one. Overall Marquette won nine of 11 events.

McFarren claimed the 100-yard freestyle and 200 free, each by rather wide margins, while VanderSchaaf outlasted the competition in the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley, each by more than 10 seconds.

Buyarski added an individual win in the 500 free by nearly 45 seconds as all three boys were part of the Redmen’s winning 200 free relay team along with Andrew King.

Buyarski also swam with the 400 free relay victors, joining Maverick Baldwin, Quinn Kerekes and Mason Doan.

Baldwin also won the 50 free and King the 100 backstroke.

In the girls meet, Kingsford’s Upper Peninsula record holder Adelaide McRoberts proved tough as she won two individual events and helped the Flivvers win a pair of relays as well.

Marquette edged out Kingsford 6-5 in the number of victories.

Henry won the 100 butterfly by less than a second over teammate Grace Sobczak, who did win the 50 free.

Henry also swam on the Redettes’ victorious 400 free relay with Hannah Winn, Maddie Wood and Kelsey Glover. They won by nearly 30 seconds.

Teammate Delaney Marchiol won the 200 IM, Ella Whalen the 100 free and Natalie Schetter the 500 free.

The Marquette teams host a pair of meets this week with Rudyard coming at 5 p.m. Tuesday and perennial powers Houghton and Sault Ste. Marie traveling to MSHS at 11 a.m. Saturday.
