Oscar Geschwind

MARQUETTE — For netting his first collegiate goal and assist over the weekend, Northern Michigan University freshman forward Oscar Geschwind was named the CCHA Rookie of the Week on Monday.

The native of Orebro, Sweden, registered his first career point with an assist on a goal scored by Vincent de Mey in the second period of the Wildcats’ 6-3 victory at Ferris State on Friday night. That goal gave NMU its first lead of the game at 3-2.

He also earned the primary assist on the game-winning goal scored by Mikey Colella early in the third period.

Geschwind followed that up on Saturday night with a late second period goal in NMU’s 7-6 victory. It was the fourth of four straight goals the Wildcats scored in the second period to give them a 5-3 lead.

He also had four shots on net during the weekend with a team-high plus-five on-ice rating.

This was Northern’s sixth weekly CCHA award this season, but first for a Rookie of the Week.

Previously, Charlie Glockner was named Goaltender of the Week on Oct. 18, Trevor Cosgrove was Defenseman of the Week on Nov. 8, Colella was Forward of the Week on Nov. 8, Rico DiMatteo was Goaltender of the Week on Nov. 15 and Ben Newhouse was Defenseman of the Week on Nov. 15.
