Negaunee Miners girls win Tracy Strom Invitational cross country meet

ISHPEMING — Led by Marlee Plaxco, Negaunee scored a 10-point victory over Houghton to win the girls team championship at the Tracy Strom Invitational high school cross country meet held at the Al Quaal Recreation Area in Ishpeming on Thursday afternoon.

Plaxco finished third in 22 minutes, 4.5 seconds as the Miners had three runners in the top 10 to finish with 42 points. The runner-up Gremlins, who had 52, placed two runners in the top 10.

Hancock was third with 87, followed by Calumet with 98, Ironwood 107 and Westwood 114. Ishpeming was among three teams not posting a team score.

In the boys meet, Negaunee finished third with 66 points despite having a pair of runners in the top 10. Houghton won the meet with 29, Jeffers was second with 55, Ironwood fourth with 79 and Westwood fifth with 116. The host Hematites and Gwinn were among five teams not posting a team score.

In the girls meet, Ishpeming’s Lola Korpi won by just over 25 seconds as she clocked 20:49.2 as Houghton’s Ingrid Seagren was runner-up in 21:15.2, also not quite 50 seconds ahead of Plaxco.

The Miners’ Endla Harris was fifth in 22:43.9, while teammate Lauren Ossenheimer was eighth in 23:08.1.

Westwood’s Retta Boburka was ninth in 23:14.2, while the Hematites’ Laynie Korpi was 13th in 24:11.4.

For the boys, the Gremlins went 1-2 as Eric Weiss won in 18:19.2, about 38 seconds ahead of teammate and runner-up Isaiah Lawson in 18:57.1.

Negaunee’s James Dank was another 10 seconds back in third in 19:07.0, while teammate Judge Anderson was sixth in 19:16.0, even though he was only nine seconds back of Dank.

Westwood’s top finisher was Ted Hair in 20th in 20:32.5, while Ishpeming’s fastest runner was Levi Nicholls in 22nd in 21:04.8 and Gwinn’s top performer was Thomas Jenkins in 23:57.2.

Most or all of these schools are scheduled to run at the Westwood Invitational, which also serves as West PAC meet No. 3, at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Wawonowin Country Club in Champion.
