MARQUETTE — Junior Ryan Palmbaum scored Northern Michigan University’s only goal of a home weekend as the Wildcats’ men’s soccer team was tagged with a loss and tie at the NMU Soccer Field.

Northwood defeated NMU 2-1 before the Wildcats and Saginaw Valley State battled through two overtimes before settling for a scoreless draw.

Northern, which slipped to 2-7-2 overall and 2-5-1 in the GLIAC, hits the road this weekend for a Friday game at Davenport and Sunday contest at Purdue Northwest.

Here is a recap of the weekend’s action:

Northwood 2, NMU 1

On Friday, Palmbaum got his goal, his second of the season, with about 7 1/2 minutes remaining after the Timberwolves already had a 2-0 lead.

Teammate Brady Kronenburg battled a Northwood defender on the far left side of the field and drove into the box, according to a news release from NMU Athletics Communications.

He then passed the ball to his right to a waiting Palmbaum, who sent the ball into the lower left portion of the net.

Northwood got on the board barely more than a minute into the game as Chase Clark scored as it was 1-0 at halftime. The T’wolves scored their second goal about 10 1/2 minutes into the second half from Andrew Simon.

“We came back from being down 2-nil with a goal late on,” NMU head coach David Poggi said. “We waited too long to be in the game at the end.”

On Sunday, defense was the theme as the teams battled over 90 minutes of regulation and 10 minutes in each overtime for 110 minutes of scoreless soccer.

“I thought the defense was great,” Poggi said. “We played really well and kept our shape together. Some injuries have forced us to play new guys and they did really well.”

Palmbaum led the Wildcats in shots with four and had one of the team’s three shots on goal.

Troy Weaver made four saves without letting in a goal for NMU.
