Negaunee Miners volleyball comes back for win in 5 sets vs. Gwinn on Thursday

GWINN — Negaunee twice came back from deficits to defeat Gwinn in five sets in a Mid-Peninsula Conference and West PAC volleyball match held at the Modeltowners’ gym on Thursday evening.

Gwinn won the opening set, then after the Miners evened the match, the Modeltowners again went ahead in the third set before Negaunee forced the fifth and deciding set.

The Miners prevailed 23-25, 25-18, 20-25, 25-8, 15-11, while their JV team also prevailed in two sets.

“It was a hard-fought battle (on Thursday) against a scrappy Gwinn team,” NHS head coach Krista Squiers said. “We had a slow start … and played flat, but a few serving runs late in the match by Josephine Thomson, Mara Sorensen and Emily Gauthier helped push our team to a victory.

“Tessa Standerford also had a stellar night flying around on defense and showed up in a big way for (our) team.”

Natalie Bell led the Negaunee offense with 12 kills, adding three service aces and 13 digs.

Teammate Summer Dudo had 29 set assists to go with three aces and 11 digs, while Raquel Carlson contributed eight kills.

The Miners’ Emily Gauthier had eight digs, two kills and two aces, while Standerford had 13 digs and two kills and Sorenson added five kills and six digs.
