Freshmen key in Marquette girls tennis tie with Menominee, 4-4

MARQUETTE — Several freshmen came through for Marquette as the Redettes pulled out a 4-4 tie against visiting Menominee in a high school girls tennis meet held Thursday.

“We had two pretty evenly matched teams fighting it out at the Shiras Courts,” MSHS head coach Karl Thomsen said. “There were a lot of long rallies and good shots being made by both teams.

“We had three freshmen, Payton Bullock and Payton Pleaugh (at No. 4 doubles) and Jenna Hassel, along with her doubles partner Hosanna Brindle, step up and have some key wins.”

Bullock and Pleaugh paired up to play and win the only three-set match of the meet, a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Menominee’s Maddy Barker and Kameron Olson.

Hassel and Brindle teamed at No. 2 doubles for a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Bella Lavia and Raquel Botbyl.

“In the singles department, Natalie Deneau continued her solid play and Kaia Miller picked up her first win at No. 1 singles,” Thomsen said.

Deneau was victorious at No. 4 singles as she bested Madison Derusha 6-4, 6-2, while Miller had the Redettes’ most emphatic win at the top of singles, a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Pearl Wellins.

Menominee, however, won both matches that included tiebreakers — at No. 3 singles, the Maroons’ Marin Park held off Marquette’s Lexi Hammerstrom 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), while at No. 3 doubles, Menominee’s MaKayla Sinks and Lola Doyle fended off the Redettes’ Sophie Krysmalski and Lyndsey Lake 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).

The other two matches featured the Maroons’ Rylee Doyle defeating Marquette’s Annabella Martinson 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, along with Menominee’s Anna Nerat and Kennedy Olson topping the Redettes’ Eliina Brazeau and Cecelia Jacuzzo 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles.

“Most of all, I was extremely happy with the positive attitudes they displayed on the courts,” Thomsen said about his players.

Marquette returns to action at 4 p.m Wednesday with a home meet against Westwood.
