KINGSFORD — The Marquette boys lived up to their role as favorites on Saturday, taking the MHSAA Upper Peninsula Division 1 track title with 140 points.

Far behind as runner-up was Gladstone with 93 while Kingsford was third with 65. Negaunee finished eighth with 25 points while Westwood was 10th with 14.

“Hats off to Kingsford for putting on such a fine meet,” Marquette coach Kyle Detmers said. “We had some good performances and our seniors were good leaders. Kam Karp had a great day and the VanderSchaaf brothers going 1-2 in the 1,600 was huge.

“Cullen Papin nearly won the 800, and Owen Beauchamp, Truman Langlois and Tyranon Dahlin had nice performances.”

Sophomore Colin VanderSchaaf took the 1,600-meter run in 4 minutes, 31.82 seconds, edging his twin brother Carson by nine-hundredths of a second.

Carson then won the 3,200 (10:24.93) and Papin took second in the 800 in 2:01.41, less than a second behind Escanaba senior Derek Douglas (2:00.68).

“It was great,” Carson VanderSchaaf said. “I was really happy with my 1,600. I took a more conservative approach because of the heat. The breeze helped a little on the home stretch, but it was still hot.

“I’m really excited for cross country this summer. With a summer full of training, I think I can improve.”

Karp took the 200 (23.24) and was runner-up in the 100 (11.32) on a lean to Calumet’s Dryden Nelson. Beauchamp placed third (11.44).

Lincoln Sager added a first in the 400 (51.41) and Dahlin was runner-up in the long jump (20-1 1/2) and third in the high jump (5-10).

The Redmen captured the 800 (1:34.09), 1,600 (3:38.01) and 3,200 relays (8:33.05) and were second in the 400 relay (45.12).

From Negaunee, Isiah Wood and Drake Spickerman went 2-3 in shot put at 40-7 and 40-2 1/2, respectively, while Bryce Dunstan was third in discus (109-5).

Westwood’s Jack Boase placed third in the 100 hurdles (16.01), followed by Marquette’s Samuel Markey in fourth (16.56) and Lamb Ngafeeson fifth (16.73) and Westwood’s Luke Vidlund sixth (17.29).

Other fourth-place finishers for Marquette were Truman Langlois in the 300 hurdles (42.92) and Colin VanderSchaaf in the 800 (2:07.86).

Sager placed fifth in the 200 (24.21) as did Beauchamp in long jump (19-7 1/4), Boase in the 300 hurdles (43.31) and Dunstan in shot put (37-11 1/2).

Sixths went to Negaunee senior Lukas Nelson in 300 hurdles (45.31) and long jump (18-10) and Kainoa Lacar in the 200 (24.23) and Westwood’s Lenny Pizziola in pole vault (10-0).

Menominee junior Brady Schultz set the U.P. high jump record at 6-8, topping the previous best (6-5) by Kingsford’s Jake Richmond in 2004.
